Metamorphosis means a change in shape or form. This is excatly what has occurred during the evolution of the award winning Urban Workshop at 50 Lonsdale Street. Situated on traditional Woiworung (Wurundjeri) land, the contemporary kinks and folds of the new office tower hover above a collection of small scale historical buildings, embracing the locations historic footprint and melding site heritage with a new urban form. In the foyer a permanent collection of historical ideas and artefacts play a critical role; these little pieces of memory assisted in forming the buildings new character. Like the chrysalis of a butterfly these layered timelines of indigenous history, urban laneways, circulation routes, bordellos and broken bits of china have evolved, shaping the building’s personality, establishing a brilliant new life in a previously bland area of the city.
